COLUMBIA, SC – Dec. 29, 2020 – The South Carolina Office of Regulatory Staff has launched the state’s Broadband Map on its website, creating an accessible platform for the public to see where broadband is – and isn’t – available in South Carolina.
The goal of the map is to identify and prioritize communities in the state where limited access to broadband has impeded the delivery of distance learning, telework and telehealth.
Demand for telehealth services has been soaring amid the coronavirus pandemic. The South Carolina Telehealth Alliance reports there were 1.3 million telehealth visits between January and June.
The Broadband Mapping project was funded by a portion of the Coronavirus Relief Fund (CRF). CostQuest Associates, Inc., was hired to perform the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) work that included address-specific data from the majority of South Carolina’s internet providers.
