The Scoop | Pumpkintown
Out of the 269 cities and towns across South Carolina, SCETV’s audience voted, selecting Veronica Brown’s submission: “Where is Pumpkintown, SC? What is the town’s history?” for July’s The Scoop.
To get the scoop on Pumpkintown, the Pickens County Library System linked SCETV’s The Scoop up with longtime Pumpkintown resident and bluegrass player Josh Johnson. Johnson met up with us at the Oolenoy Community Center in Pumpkintown to tell us more about Pumpkintown - and plucked us a tune on his banjo!
Pumpkintown is a community located in Pickens County, northwest of Greenville, S.C. in the Oolenoy River Valley. The valley is a short distance from Table Rock State Park, and views of exposed rock on the mountain can be seen from Pumpkintown. The community is thought to have been named by a traveler who passed through the Oolenoy River Valley in the 1700s, saw the rich fertile land covered with huge yellow pumpkins, and decided to call the area Pumpkintown.
