This segment of Sandlapper's Corner takes a very futuristic bent when a spaceship lands in South Carolina and a space explorer emerges who has a keen interest in learning about the state. The young student who finds him offers to tell him all about South Carolina and the duo travel around the state invisibly.
First, they visit an interstate highway system and then the space explorer asks about ports, and they talked about Charleston, Georgetown, and Port Royal Harbors. After a discussion of the rail system, they talked about the industries. The boy noted that farming was a prominent industry in the state, and they talk about tobacco, cotton, soy beans and peaches.
The tour takes them to a textile factory, lumber mill, and then to a granite quarry. Later the boy gives him a tour of schools and colleges. They talk about wars and military installations in the state. The episode ends with the Sandlapper's Song.
Sandlapper’s Corner was a children's educational program that began airing on SCETV in the 1970s. Produced by Dr. Sandra G. Thomas, the show was about South Carolina—its people and places, its present and past.
