This ETV LEARN course for 20 renewal credits is designed to enhance our knowledge of the relationship between South Carolina history and the arts - all of which have helped create a diverse and unique heritage. Home to a wealth of artists in all genres, architecturally interesting places, and dynamic folk traditions, our state, geographically and culturally diverse, has been shaped by the arts throughout our history. To quote Oscar Wilde: “Life imitates art far more than art imitates life.” History and the arts are linked. Art often reflects history by exhibiting how people wished to express themselves – their ideas and emotions. And the arts – all genres of writing, visual arts and performing arts - are all important to the development of our society. This PD course highlights people and historical sites, plus explores related online resources that teachers of all subjects/grades can integrate to enhance lessons. The 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote was ratified in August 1920. As our nation neared the mark of the 100th anniversary, SCETV launched the Women Vision SC initiative to focus on issues affecting women throughout the state and nation and serve as a platform to highlight trailblazing South Carolina women who have made an impact. This course features Women Vision SC multimedia resources, additional discussions with women leaders and special programs about the lives and careers of other South Carolina women, to examine the changing role of women from our past to today, provide insights into career pathways as well as relate helpful career advice, and inspire as we learn about the character, leadership and achievements of these outstanding women.

Take on the South with Dr. Walter Edgar (Grades 6-12) is self-paced, one-hour (20 renewal credits) course consisting of eight one-hour video lessons about the South, which were produced by SCETV in a debate format for USC’s Institute for Southern Studies and moderated by Dr. Walter Edgar, historian and author. Each program restores the time-honored tradition of true debate, providing thought-provoking positions, which are relevant and substantive. Two distinguished scholars each present positions on interesting topics about the South, which include “What Was the Most Influential 20th Century Southern Novel?,” “What is the Most Important Southern Sport, NASCAR or Football?,” “What is Real Southern Cooking?,” “ Would Slavery Have Survived the Civil War?” and “How Has the South Shaped American Music?” After each debate, Dr. Edgar joins in the discussion. These programs are recommended to support the National Social Studies Standards for High School and components are also suitable for viewing in middle grades.

This one-hour recertification course showcases eMedia and ETV produced resources about South Carolina to assist educators in learning about our state’s history. Noted South Carolina historian Dr. Walter Edgar discusses key issues in SC History. South Carolina and the Civil War are discussed in three lessons: 1) Secession from the Union, 2) Beginning of the Civil War, and 3) Civil War in South Carolina. Participants will learn about political events, personalities, military campaigns, participation of African Americans, and the upheaval of this period in SC. We will visit the SC State Museum as they focus on the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War, featuring the museum’s exhibit and program plans marking the historic events that led to the firing on Fort Sumter. The course also includes The Story of Mary Boykin Chestnut and her writings, which became "A Diary from Dixie." We will also virtually visit sites around the Palmetto State and learn about their historic and special relevance to South Carolina today (SCETV produced).

SC Chronicles VI: Reconstruction Era is the sixth edition in the SC Chronicles series. This sixth series looks at the period after the Civil War beginning in 1865 that was a time of major crisis for a battle-worn nation and also highlights the great changes in the economy and society that took place when the Reconstruction era ended, the period right up until almost the end of the 19th century. These lessons, including some with noted South Carolina historian Dr. Walter Edgar, examine this important period of our South Carolina history, showing how it relates to what came before and after.
