A gothic romantic tragedy modeled after the works of Danish author Karen Blixen, Vanessa was first performed in 1958, composed and directed by Gian Carlo Menotti, founder of both Spoleto Festivals.
In this production from Spoleto 1978, Vanessa has waited 20 years for her lover Anatol’s return. When his son arrives instead, Vanessa and her niece Erika find themselves in a tragic war over the same man.
