Time Flies | Endowment Intern Jenna

Interns Shannon Simmons, Rebecca Dymock, and Jenna Schiferl

As with each week I’ve spent at ETV, this one flew by. On Tuesday, I stood before a group of my peers, supervisors, and Endowment staff on Tuesday and presented an overview of what I've been working on for the past few weeks at the intern luncheon. I decided to create a PowerPoint presentation, but many of the interns showed a brief video showcasing a specific project they completed. I especially enjoyed watching my fellow Columbia intern, Rebecca Dymock, present her “Our Town” episode on Ridgeway, South Carolina. You can watch the digital short here. It was lovely to socialize with interns from the regional stations and share stories about our experiences. It's hard to believe that I've already spent 7 weeks here, and I only have 3 to go. I've been working on so many different projects and I'm sad to think that my time here is already passed so quickly. Lucky for me, I don't have much time to dwell on this feeling, as each day is full of new projects, ideas, and experiences.

This week, I accompanied Rebecca and her supervisor to Rock Hill to interview Shannon Simmons for the annual intern video. This was a nice opportunity to get out of the office and learn some new skills. I monitored audio levels during Shannon’s interview and helped to shoot lots of B-roll footage. I haven’t had lots of practice shooting video on a manual DSLR camera, but I am very interested to learn more. I hope to eventually become more comfortable with camera work, but I know operating them with ease comes with a lot of practice.

I was also lucky enough to sit in on a content development meeting. Producers from many regional stations were in attendance and pitched potential project ideas. It was nice to be included in such an important meeting and watch how the decision-making process works.

Since election season has quieted down for the summer, I wanted to focus some attention on Palmetto Scene. I pitched some stories to Aimee and received the “go-ahead” to begin pursuing a story. In the upcoming weeks, I will be scheduling interviews and fleshing out my idea of what I want it to be. More updates to come soon!

Among other things, I also started to draft social media posts for South Carolina Lede this week. The idea is to have a weekly “Throwback Thursday” post that features interesting historical factoids. I've collected lots of information, but now the challenge is drafting them into easily readable and entertaining social media captions. You can follow @scledepod on Instagram to learn more.
