Elementary School Uses Telehealth to Enhance Student Care

Hemingway Elementary is a school located in the town of Hemingway in Williamsburg County, South Carolina. The school is situated in a typically rural setting with open swaths of land, hay fields, few homes, and two-lane highways.

Just as in many other rural areas of South Carolina, families in Hemingway seeking pediatric treatment for their child are faced with a challenge; There is no pediatrician in town. In order to increase local access to quality care, Hemingway Elementary tapped into telehealth. Through a secure video link, students are able to have a consultation with a doctor in real-time from their school nurse’s office. Elneicia Burgess, mother of the fourth-grader, Tristen, believes the telehealth consult is very beneficial, and Tristen is also happy about it.
