The State House Gavel: Graham signals openness to VC Summer revival

Good morning. It's a very cold Tuesday. It's the second week of the 2025 legislative session. As a reminder, the SC House and Senate will be in what's called a perfunctory session and will not be meeting for floor debate or votes. Both chambers are prioritizing committee work so that they can advance bills to the floor.
The 126th General Assembly of South Carolina gavels into session on Jan. 14, 2025.

A snapshot: How the PIT count could help Rock Hill get a better idea of how to combat homelessness

It helps to think of the point-in-time count, or PIT, the way you would think of an election poll: as a snapshot of one corner of one moment in time and not as a complete picture.
Outside the Rock Hill branch of the York County Library, a woman (she did not want her face or name to be public, but consented to being photographed) wiles away a cold January morning. She is one of what she's convinced is a growing number of people experiencing homelessness in the community.

Winter storm is on the way to South Carolina, winter storm warning for the Lowcountry

A winter storm is expected to bring historic amounts of snow and other winter precipitation across the Gulf Coast states and possibly even along the immediate coast of South Carolina. Snow is forecast across the Lowcountry, where winter storm warnings are in effect as the city prepares for measurable snow. The last time Charleston received snow was in 2018, when it was also recorded as the third-largest snowfall, receiving 5 inches of snow. The city is better prepared and prepares to receive up to 2 inches of snow that will likely contain sleet.

"Don't turn against, lean into each other," President Biden urges in Charleston

As President Joe Biden and the first lady carefully descended the stairs of Air Force One, on a slick, overcast day at Joint Base Charleston Sunday, there was a familiarity about the visit, a kind of homecoming if you will.

President Joe Biden embraced Congressman Jim Clyburn at Joint Base Charleston in North Charleston, as he spent his final day in office in the Lowcountry. Jan. 19, 2025.

Essentials: Stocking your winter weather emergency kit

35 states from Texas to the Northeastern US are under some type of winter storm alert over the next few days. The potential exists for several inches of snow + ice and sleet. The cold comes on the tail of another system that brought scattered rain and snow to parts of the East Coast over the weekend.

Point-in-time count begins this week, and South Carolina cities are looking to leverage the data

On Jan. 22, volunteers around the state are set to take to the streets to meet the people who live there.

Unless the weather forces a delay, Wednesday is the first day of the annual point-in-time, or PIT, count, which seeks to tally the number of people in various communities who are experiencing homelessness. PIT happens in the last week of January, as it has since its inception in 2007.
