Judge extends South Carolina voter registration deadlines after Helene

South Carolinians will have more time to register to vote because of Hurricane Helene.

Circuit Court Judge Daniel Coble agreed Friday to grant a motion for a temporary injunction and extend the state’s voter registration deadlines by 10 days as many residents still are without power and crews work to clear debris from roads and homes.

Coble's formal order is expected to be filed later Friday.

Last week more than 238,000 people voted early across South Carolina and nearly 38,000 mail-in absentee ballots were returned. This is the first general election in our state with early voting thanks to the massive bi partisan election integrity bill Republican and Democratic lawmakers passed in May.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina's high court on Friday set a date of Nov. 1 to put to death a man who killed a store clerk a quarter-century ago, the second of an expected six executions in about six months as the state ramps up its use of capital punishment after a 13-year pause.

Ongoing concerns with rising river waters and several large South Carolina rivers

Parts of the Midlands and the PeeDee continue to experience river flooding in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. Hurricane season check in, how are we doing with 2 months left?

As of this week, the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season entered its fifth month. There was much fanfare about a hyperactive season leading up to the beginning of the season on June 1st. That was quickly followed by the explosive and record breaking landfall of Hurricane Beryl in the Caribbean and then another landfall in Texas, in July. But soon after, there was a lull in activity and it wasn’t until Hurricane Debby that the season seemed to pick up momentum again.

We'd rather be working, say striking dockworkers in Charleston

Dozens of dockworkers wave signs along Morrison Drive in Charleston as a strike affecting 36 ports nationwide stretches into a third day.

The workers with the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) say they’d much rather be unloading docks and getting paid than fighting for fair wages and a ban on automation. The latter, they believe, threatens jobs.

“We’re not the bad guys,” says Randy Campbell, the Vice President of ILA local 1771.
