Bennettsville preps flood-prone communities for Debby

Officials in Bennettsville are keeping a close eye on Lake Paul Wallace, which has had recurring flooding problems since a dam breach at the lake forced evacuations from two low-lying communities in May.

On Wednesday, Mayor Leith Fowler said the city, Marlboro County Emergency Management, and the state Department of Natural Resources (DNR), which manages Lake Paul Wallace, have been prepping the area for heavy rain from Tropical Storm Debby.

After a dam breach, state officials have spent months trying to keep overspill from happening at Lake paul A. Wallace. But spills still plague two poor, low-lying neighborhoods on one end of the lake.

Tornado Watch issued for parts of South Carolina ahead of Debby

As Debby closes in on the state, conditions are becoming more favorable for tornadoes. The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for southern portions of the Lowcountry through 4 pm.
