The State House Gavel: Auditor resigns amid $1.8B saga, DNC chair forum in SC

It's Friday and the second legislative week is done. And if you thought Week 1 was a doozy, this week was too. Before we get into all the hubbub from the Statehouse, we want to say thank you for reading The State House Gavel.
The first year of the legislative session is set to end May 11, which is less than a month away. Crossover Day was April 10 which is a time when bills have to clear one chamber to another in order to have a higher chance of making it to the governor’s desk before Sine Die this year.

SC auditor tangled up in $1.8B accounting error resigns

The state auditor tangled up in South Carolina's $1.8 billion accounting error has resigned. Auditor George Kennedy resigned by letter to the State Fiscal Accountability Authority, otherwise known as SFAA, Thursday morning by letter.

The State House Gavel: SC Senate gets a new portrait, 2026 gov race heats up

It's Thursday. Snow and ice upended most legislative hearings Wednesday, and we've already seen a couple of cancellations for Thursday due to the residual conditions. As we reported already, the Legislature never intended this week to be filled with floor debates, only legislative hearings.

Rep. Nancy Mace says she is considering a run for South Carolina governor

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina said Wednesday that she is "seriously considering" a gubernatorial run in 2026 and will make a final decision in the coming weeks.

Former Chester County sheriff, deputy released from federal prison

Former Chester County Sheriff Alex Underwood and former Deputy Johnny Neal were released from federal custody on Jan. 17, ahead of their original projected release date, Jan. 23.
