Every stride at Walk Like MADD in Columbia brings us closer to ending impaired driving, a public safety crisis that is worsening in South Carolina. On Saturday, May 3rd, impaired driving survivors, victims’ families, law enforcement, and advocates will rally at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy for the Walk Like MADD 5K, a powerful event that brings the community together to raise money that directly funds MADD’s 24/7 free victim services. With impaired driving fatalities up 33% nationwide since 2019, and drunk driving crashes making up 43% of all traffic fatalities in South Carolina in 2022, this year’s Walk Like MADD is more urgent than ever.   In fact, South Carolina saw a 17% increase in drunk driving fatalities in 2022 compared to 2021, according to the latest data. This preventable surge in impaired driving makes this year’s Walk Like MADD event a powerful call to action. Participants will share personal stories of loss, survival, and resilience—stories that underscore the toll of impaired driving and the urgency to act now.
