Residents of Tega Cay will be the first in South Carolina to have a choice about who their highspeed internet provider will be.
On Wednesday, Google announced at a press conference in Tega Cay that it will launch highspeed service that will compete with Comporium, York County’s main internet and telecom provider.
Darrel Heger, general manager of Google Fiber in North Carolina and other states in the South, said Wednesday that the project in Tega Cay will begin next spring and is set for completion by the close of 2024.
The project is being funded privately by Google, which stated that some residents will qualify for free service.
Heger said the company chose Tega Cay because it is a logical place to start as Google Fiber builds out from Charlotte.
Gov. Henry McMaster said at the press conference that this partnership with Google is the first of a projected many to bring high-speed internet to the state.
In an email, Matthew Dosch, Comporium's executive vice president and chief operating officer, stated, "Competition has been a part of our industry for decades. Comporium will continue to focus on our customers’ needs by providing industry-leading technology, superior customer service, and same-day outage responses just like we have since the first streets were laid in Tega Cay.”
Dosch said that the company plans to roll out next-generation multigigabit services next year.
