Each Thursday this November, South Carolina Public Radio presents Stories of Service highlighting conversations between veterans, active service members, and their loved ones from across the state.

In this edition, Jacquelyn Stokes speaks with her son Quenton Stokes-Brown about her cousin, Charles "Sonny" Couch, his experiences in the Vietnam War, and the challenges he faced in a segregated south.

These interviews are recorded by StoryCorps, a national nonprofit whose mission is to preserve and share humanity’s stories in order to build connections between people and create a more just and compassionate world. These interviews are fully funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a private corporation funded by the American public.

Note: These segments are edited for length and clarity.
