Hurricane Idalia is forecasted to reach hurricane strength as it moves inland on southeast Georgia and South Carolina coast late Wednesday afternoon.
Flood warnings pose a threat to the coast. Storm surge could bring two to four feet of water above ground in areas southwest of South Santee River. The National Weather Service’s window of concern remains through early Thursday morning.
As of Wednesday afternoon, Hurricane Warnings are in effect for the following counties: Inland Jasper, Beaufort, Coastal Colleton, Coastal Jasper. A Hurricane Watch is in effect for Inland Berkeley, Charleston and Tidal Berkeley.
A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for 31 South Carolina counties. These counties could see sustained winds between 39 mph and 74 mph within the next 48 hours.
While the storm is predicted to weaken as it works its way over Georgia, it still could create hazardous conditions for South Carolina. Heavy rains are likely to continue to move in this afternoon through tonight.
The National Weather Service recorded wind gusts up to 81 mph on Horseshoe Beach, FL this morning as Idalia made landfall on Keaton Beach, FL.
There is a potential for isolated tornadoes on the coast. Seek shelter if alerts are issued. Widespread power outages are being reported across Florida.
