Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms Likely across the Palmetto State Friday

Friday Severe Storm Risk in the Lowcountry

Widespread rain and a few strong thunderstorms are likely on Friday over much of South Carolina. The strongest storms may produce isolated damaging wind gusts and a low chance for a brief tornado in the Lowcountry.

The unsettled weather is expected to develop ahead of a gradually intensifying area of low pressure that will move quickly from the northeastern Gulf of Mexico to the Mid-Atlantic states. The Storm Prediction Center has placed portions of the Lowcountry, including Charleston, Beaufort, and Hilton Head, under a marginal risk for severe thunderstorms on Friday. If strong thunderstorms develop, they are most likely late Friday evening into early Saturday morning based on the Thursday afternoon update from the Storm Prediction Center.

Rain is expected to overspread the state Thursday night into early Friday morning. It is expected to continue for most of Friday and become more scattered on Friday night. The rain is expected to gradually wind down on Saturday morning. Rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches are forecast over a large portion of the state from this system.

The air mass may become unstable enough, primarily in Charleston, Beaufort, Jasper, Colleton, and Hampton counties, for a few thunderstorms to become strong enough to produce damaging winds or a brief tornado. At this time, the threat for damaging thunderstorms is likely to be isolated.
