A Few Strong Storms Are Possible Tuesday

Storm Prediction Center Outlook

A few reports of wind damage are possible on Tuesday across portions of the Palmetto State.

Thunderstorms are possible in the morning and early afternoon hours as a disturbance high in the atmosphere moves northeast out of Georgia and into the state. At the same time, a cold front will approach from the west. Unstable air and strong winds high in the atmosphere may allow a few of the storms to produce damaging wind and perhaps an isolated tornado or two. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a “slight risk” for severe weather over the Pee Dee and Grand Strand areas. A “marginal risk” is in effect for the Midlands and Lowcountry. The chance of damaging thunderstorms is much lower over the Upstate region.

Conditions are expected to improve as the front moves off the coast Tuesday evening. Cooler and drier weather will follow the front on Wednesday.

Much of the state remains in a moderate to severe drought. The front should produce some rain, but most areas should receive a half inch or less of rain because of the front’s fast movement.
