Wintry weather cut this week's session of the SC General Assembly short, but lawmakers had plenty of questions for the CEO of Dominion Energy.  Domion Energy has proposed to buy SCANA Corp., the parent company of South Carolina Electric and Gas.

State lawmakers returned to Columbia this week for the 2018 session of the S.C. General Assembly. Fallout from last summer's collapse of the V.C. Nuclear is expected to dominate this year's session.  Also, this week the House of Representatives wasted little time in overriding Gov. Henry McMaster's veto of some $20 million dollars for new school buses.

Former Rep. Rick Quinn Pleads Guilty In Ongoing Corruption Case

Former state Rep. Rick Quinn could face jail time after pleading guilty to a statutory misconduct in office charge, stemming from an ongoing State House corruption probe that’s ensnared several current and former state lawmakers, as well as his politically-connected father.

Rep. Todd Atwater Announces Attorney General Bid

Rep. Todd Atwater, R-Lexington, announced on the State House steps Wednesday his run for attorney general.

Atwater is taking aim at current Attorney General Alan Wilson, a fellow Republican from Lexington County, who is running for his third term in office.

The crux of Atwater's campaign is to stymie corruption in Columbia, something he says the current attorney general can't do since he removed himself from the ongoing State House corruption probe citing a conflict of interest.

Gov. Henry McMaster Announces Running Mate Pamela Evette

Pamela Evette named Gov. Henry McMasters 2018 running mate on Nov. 28, 2017.

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster named Upstate businesswoman Pamela Evette as his running mate in the 2018 gubernatorial race  on Tuesday afternoon.
 
Evette, 50, is president and CEO of Quality Business Solutions, a Travelers Rest-based company, which generates nearly $1 billion in revenue. She is a self-proclaimed “Trump girl” who is in good company with McMaster, who was the first statewide elected official to endorse President Donald Trump in 2016.

To understand the 2018 governor’s race, rewind a year to the election of President Donald Trump.

Trump’s win moved up South Carolina’s gubernatorial race calendar, when shortly after he won, he named then Gov. Nikki Haley to become his United Nations ambassador.

Moments after a near unanimous Senate vote in January, Haley resigned her office to second-in-command Henry McMaster. The move instantly gave McMaster greater name recognition and a modern track record to run on.
