The Great American Read

Dear Viewers and Listeners,

In May, a new adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women comes to public television. This timeless coming-of-age story follows the March sisters—Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy—as they journey from childhood to adulthood in Concord, Massachusetts, during the Civil War.

The Great American Read campaign kicks off this month with a two-hour special, the first of an eight-part television competition and national campaign that explores the joy of reading. Over the summer, viewers read and vote on favorite works of fiction; the series returns in the fall to highlight the winning titles.

Joe Mantenega and Gary Sinise again host the annual National Memorial Day Concert, honoring our men and women in uniform, their families, and all who have given their lives for our country. The concert is broadcast live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol as well as to our troops around the world.

The Spoleto Festival USA returns to Charleston this month, and SC Public Radio’s Bradley Fuller highlights the sights and sounds on Sonatas and Soundscapes. The Festival runs May 24-June 10, so be sure to tune in for a sample of all the wonderful arts offerings. Invisibilia returns to the SC Public Radio schedule, an intriguing miniseries that explores the intangible forces that shape human behavior—our ideas, beliefs and emotions. A show new to South Carolina Public Radio, Reveal, a Peabody Award-winning investigative journalism program, goes behind the scenes of today’s news, finding out what really happened. The series debuts May 3 at 11 p.m. on South Carolina Public Radio’s news and talk stations.

May is full of diverse programs; we hope you enjoy them!
