Tell Them We Are Rising

Dear Viewers and Listeners:

In February, a variety of SCETV’s programming recognizes the struggles and achievements of African Americans.

SCETV will broadcast and host local screenings for the Independent Lens offering, Tell Them We Are Rising: The Story of Black Colleges and Universities. This special explores the role that Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have played in shaping American history.  Screenings were held on January 16 (Richland Library, North Main Street), January 22 (South Carolina State University in conjunction with Claflin University) and two on February 1 (Benedict College and Richland Library, Sandhills). A rebroadcast of SCETV’s national presentation, Liberty and Slavery: The Paradox of America’s Founding Fathers, examines the contradictory beliefs of liberty for all during a time of slavery.

Scarred Justice: The Orangeburg Massacre 1968 commemorates the 50th anniversary of this tragic event, when civil rights protests on the campus of S.C. State University led to the deaths of three African-American students. Following the broadcast, SCETV’s The Orangeburg Massacre: Remembrances and Reckoning examines the legacy of this event, as well as its impact on the lives of those who were involved and their families. Host Beryl Dakers talks to Congressman Jim Clyburn, Cleveland Sellers Jr., and others who were there that fateful night.

For our younger viewers, the new series Pinkalicious & Peterrific encourages children ages 3–5 to engage in the creative arts and self-expression, covering music, dance, and visual arts.

SC Public Radio’s “No Pledge Drive” Pledge Drive kicks off on February 1, and we thank you in advance for your continued support and loyalty, which we could not do without!
