PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Lab Interviews Columbine Massacre Survivor

The Parkland high school shooting on February 14th, 2018, sparked a movement. It encouraged teenagers all over the country to become activists for gun reform. On April 20th, 2018, the 19th anniversary of the Columbine High School Massacre, many high school students participated in a national walkout to peacefully express their opinions on school safety and gun reform.

Student Journalists from Legacy Early College in Greenville, South Carolina, used the anniversary of the Columbine High School Massacre to tell the story of their Physical Education teacher, Lindsey O’Donnell, who was a survivor of the shooting. She discusses how fitness and mindfulness helped her cope with the pain she endured afterwards.

The students are a part of the PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs program, which connects middle and high school students to local PBS stations and news professionals in their community to produce original, student-generated video reports. PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs are located all around the country.
