Columbia School Working to Improve Learning through Art

December 6, 2018 - Posted in Palmetto Scene by Charles Dymock

“It’s a place where kids have an opportunity to be themselves. I feel MAC gives kids an opportunity to show what they love,” says Lauren, a current 6th grader at Midlands Arts Conservatory.

Midlands Arts Conservatory is a tuition free public charter school with concentrations in the fine arts. In addition to a strong core of academics, students spend half their day exploring their passion and strengthening their global perspective through academic and artistic integration.

“We integrate the fine arts into the core academics because if you can reach a child through their passion, they will do anything for you,” says Shannon Hickey, Head of School at Midlands Arts Conservatory.

MAC hopes to build an education model that can be replicated in communities across the nation.
