It's one of the state's largest sporting events people can take part in and it's never been postponed or cancelled before, until now.

The 43rd annual Cooper River Bridge run initially moved from April to August because of the coronavirus pandemic is officially off.

The 10 K connects the town of Mount Pleasant with the city of Charleston and the mayors of both communities issued a statement Friday.

"These are truly unprecedented times and, as the situation is constantly evolving, we believe that this decision is in the best interest of all our citizens and visitors."

Race organizers issued a statement as well.

"While we share in the disappointment of having to cancel, we appreciate everyone's understanding and support," said Race Director Irv Batten.

"Our event would not be possible without our wonderful participants, volunteers and sponsors, and their safety will always be our top priority."

Last year, the 6.2- mile race brought nearly 30,000 runners and walkers across the Ravenel Bridge over the Cooper River.  Organizers say they're looking forward to next year's event scheduled for Saturday, March 27, 2021.

In the meantime, they are updating their website and offering several options including a virtual race June 15.  For more information go to https://bridgerun.com/.
