Seen and Heard at State House Flag Rally: June 23

Several people protested in front of the South Carolina State House yesterday, June 23, asking for the removal of the Confederate battle flag.

Senators and leaders, including Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin, joined the push to remove the flag.

“Take it down now,” said Benjamin. “No bullet can stop this movement, no gunshot can tear it apart.”

People asked for the South Carolina General Assembly to remove the Confederate battle flag from the grounds of the State House and take it to a museum.

The General Assembly met after the rally and voted 103 to 10 to start discussing whether the Confederate flag should be moved.
