Coastal Carolina University held its inaugural International Gullah Geechee and African Diaspora Conference this past spring. At this landmark event, 1937 Works Progress Administration (WPA) slave recordings were repatriated, or brought back to their community of origin. One of the songs is thought to be the inspiration behind the role of a lead character in a blockbuster hit movie.
