Private Health Network Connects Rural State
The Palmetto State Providers Network (PSPN) connects hundreds of South Carolina health providers. Through this fiber-based network, sites have higher broadband capabilities, allowing data to flow to and from sites. This HIPAA-compliant infrastructure facilitates statewide telehealth efforts, as this type of technology relies on a strong network connection.
In 2008, the Medical University of South Carolina applied for a federal grant through the Federal Communications Commission to connect rural sites with limited Internet options, starting PSPN. Today, the consortium leader for PSPN is Palmetto Care Connections (PCC), a telehealth and broadband nonprofit. PCC accesses the broadband and telehealth needs of rural sites, and works to manage extensive paperwork and costs for sites across the state, in an effort to increase connectivity and access to care.
