Carolina Classrooms: School Climate - View online!
This edition of Carolina Classrooms explores ways in which South Carolina schools are helping students feel safe and comfortable in their classrooms as we address the important question: “What is the school climate in South Carolina?”
Parents, educators and students will share programs already in place in our state, and offer their advice on how to contribute to a positive school climate in this special hosted by Angel Malone, Career and Technology Education Director at the South Carolina Department of Education.
Highlights of the program include:
- Principal Gary Culler partnered with Prisma Health to provide mental health training to students at Easley High School. The students are taught to recognize mental health issues in their fellow students and what they can do to help each other.
- Charleston teacher Patrick Martin and Towner Magill are cofounders of the Safe Schools Project, a group that advocates for more school counselors, smaller class sizes and safer schools.
- Sherrie Beaver, School Counselor Liaison with the South Carolina Department of Education, will share the role school counselors play in supporting students.
- Dr. Aditi Srivastav Bussells, Director of Research for the Children's Trust of South Carolina, will discuss ACEs - Adverse Childhood Experiences.
