Beyond Barbados: The Carolina Connection, airing on SCETV June 20, is a one-hour “Carolina Stories” documentary that explores the complex story of Barbados and South Carolina.

The ties are extensive.  Over half of both the white and enslaved populations in South Carolina came from Barbados. For more than 400 years, the island has had a significant impact on the development and culture of the western hemisphere.

The program features the natural history and colonization of the island, the “sweet success” of island industry, the birth of the nation, and the influence of Barbados in Carolina.  The documentary also covers South Carolina’s economy, commerce, slavery and pirates, the culture and tourism of Barbados today, and the shared culture of Bajan and Gullah cuisine and architecture.

A project with SCETV and the South Carolina Heritage Corridor, Beyond Barbados is funded through a grant with the National Park Service.

In addition to the broadcast, the documentary is being versioned for classroom use on Knowitall.org and the LearningWhy website features 1:1 lesson plans that correlate to the documentary. Additionally, educator workshops are being hosted throughout the state this Fall. Workshop topics are listed below. Additional details are forthcoming.

  • Barbadian Soul Food Seminars
  • Songversation in Studio: Barbadian Music
