Celebrating Dean & Donna – ETV Education Retirees
ETV Education is celebrating the outstanding careers of two wonderful professionals! Dean Byrd, Director of ETV Education, and Donna Thompson, Pre K-12Technology Trainer, will be retiring in July.
Donna Thompson has been a state employee for 29 years and valued member of the South Carolina ETV staff for 25 of those years. For the last 14 years, she has served ETV Education as a Pre K-12 technology trainer. She started the face-to-face training with StreamlineSC and has personally trained well over 20,000 South Carolina teachers. Donna is considered by educators throughout the state as one of the best instructional technology experts and has mentored thousands of teachers and administrators. Her bright laugh and helpful “can-do” attitude will be sorely missed by all at SCETV. Donna has many hobbies, including being a leader with a tatting (lace making) group with members across the globe, directing a hand bell choir, and singing in her church choir as well as with the Columbia Choral Society. She and her husband Jeff, who is also retiring from ETV, stay busy with their wonderful family and many friends.
Dean Byrd, Director of ETV Education, is retiring after nearly 19 years with SCETV. Dean has steered ETV’s overall educational focus and services to keep pace with the changing needs and demands of the educators we serve. This has resulted in continued growth and greater impact for the education community in our entire state. In addition, he helped secure a 30 year lease for the EBS (Educational Broadband Service) spectrum that added needed funds to the ETV budget and free Wi-Fi service for hundreds of school facilities. Dean received the Ed Tech 2015 “Making It Happen” Award and the 2017 National Educational Broadband Services Association Outstanding Member Award. He is a fellow of the Midlands Diversity Leadership Initiative of the Riley Institute at Furman University. The ETV Education team will miss Dean’s leadership; positive, caring attitude; and constant humor. Working with and for him has been an adventure! Dean and his wife built a lovely home on the coast several years ago and now with a boat to explore the marshes and barrier islands, he is set to be the captain of a new ship!
Congratulations to these two deserving professionals and best of luck as you chart your new path! We thank you for your service, we send you off with blessings for good health and happiness, and we will greatly miss you.
