World History or World Geography Teacher-in-Residence at Library of Congress - Apply by April 17
The Educational Outreach office of the Library of Congress is seeking applications from world history or world geography teachers for a Teacher-in-Residence position during the 2017-18 school year.
The Library of Congress Teacher-in-Residence program is designed to give the selected educator a unique professional development experience — a year at the Library in Washington, DC, working side by side with staff, contributing to K-12 education programs and materials, advising on outreach to world history, world geography, and other teachers, and helping to uncover and make visible compelling primary sources in the Library's collections.
The Library of Congress is the world's largest federal cultural institution, and the repository of unparalleled treasures in varied formats, including prints and photographs, audio-visual materials, recorded sound, rare books, and the world's largest map collection.
The successful candidate will embrace the diversity of these collections and bring a strategic approach to designing materials and programs to meet the needs of world history and world geography teachers and the students they teach.
Previous Teachers-in-Residence have designed and delivered professional development workshops, created classroom materials, and led and supported projects to reach and support a diverse audience of educators nationwide.
The successful Teacher-in-Residence candidate will have:
- A track record of integrating historical sources, perspectives, and connections into their classroom teaching,
- Leadership experience, especially in designing and delivering professional development or developing classroom materials for other educators’ use. designing and delivering professional development for early elementary teachers,
- Knowledge of the Library's digitized primary sources,
- Experience and enthusiasm for conducting research,
- An innovative and collaborative work style, able to work on a team in an office environment,
- An ability to think “big picture” as well as focus on details and multitask,
- Excellent spoken and written communication skills,
- The ability to live and work in the Washington, DC, metro area for the duration of the school year.
The selected teacher will participate in this program via an agreement between the Library and his or her home school, school district, or institution. The Library will reimburse the teacher's employer for salary and benefits paid to the teacher during the school year.
NOTE: In previous years, a housing stipend has been awarded to those whose home is outside of the Washington, DC, metro area. The awarding of the position, and any stipend, is subject to availability of funds.
In addition to assisting Educational Outreach staff, the Teacher-in-Residence will undertake a project using Library primary sources to benefit his or her home school, district, or institution, to be implemented during the following academic year. This project could be a workshop on teaching with primary sources for fellow teachers, a district-wide social media campaign to promote teaching with the Library's primary sources, the design of a new collaborative curriculum unit, or some other product or activity. As part of the application process, candidates should propose projects that they have designed in collaboration with colleagues and that have the support of appropriate school and or district administrators.
Applications will be evaluated based on the teacher's experience using historical sources in the classroom, familiarity with the Library of Congress, ability to contribute to the Library's goal to reach more early elementary teachers, and overall contributions to the field of education as evidenced by his or her experience, essays, and recommendation letters.
Deadlines and Key Dates:
- Applications must be received by Monday, April 17th;
- Finalists will be required to complete a telephone interview;
- Selection decision will be made by Tuesday, May 9th;
- The residency period dates match those of the teacher's school year.

- What is the value of primary sources in education, particularly a world history or world geography classroom? Consider both your school setting and the larger field.
- Describe your use of Library of Congress primary sources and other historical sources, perspectives, or connections in teaching. What teaching strategies have you used? What were the results? (Please include at least one illustrative example of work produced by you or a student.)
- How would the Teacher-in-Residence position support your professional development goals?
- Project plan description (no more than two pages)
- Two letters of recommendation/support:
- One from a collaborating teacher
- One from an administrator who will supervise your proposed project
- At least one illustrative example of teacher or student produced work
- Current resume or curriculum vitae
- Finalists will be required to provide a letter of support from an individual authorized to approve personnel agreements; however, it is advised that all applicants secure this letter as soon as possible, as there will be a very short turnaround time once finalists are notified.
