PBS LearningMedia Resources Explore Frontiers of Engineering!
Explore the frontiers of engineering with PBS! Featured PBS LearningMedia resources highlight careers in engineering and offer students a look at what it takes to design rockets, jets, and 3D printers.
How to Build a Rocket and Think Like an Engineer
Do young children have a natural ability, fueled by their own curiosity, to pose problems and invent solutions? If children are to develop the ability to investigate, ask and test questions, design solutions and extend their thinking in more complex and sophisticated ways, they need the support of an expert guide. As educators, it’s up to us to tune into the moments in the block area, the art center, or the playground when children are perceiving problems and designing solutions, and give them language for what they are doing, and encourage them to extend their thinking to the next step in the process.
In this lesson from the Children’s Museum of Denver and Rocky Mountain PBS, your young learners will have the chance to think like an engineer and learn to solve problems through the “design thinking” process. They will play with the science of air and investigate the forces of flight through several hands-on, DIY activities. EXPLORE: http://to.pbs.org/1OcH4TX
Bob the Builder and Who Helps Build a Community
Just as “Bob the Builder” (from PBS Kids) and his team renovate, repair and construct their environment, preschoolers like to explore and change their environments, too! They are natural builders – blocks are meant to be stacked, blanket forts draped over furniture, or a stream of water dammed and redirected.
In this “Bob the Builder” activity, early learners will be introduced to the terms “engineer” and “construction” while learning about the importance of these roles in planning and building a community. Students will also be able to design and build their own skyscrapers as they develop skills in design, creativity and teamwork. Expand their curiosity and wonder in their community as Bob creates his! EXPLORE: http://to.pbs.org/1oi8D9a
