If you’ve never had the chance to be in a room with Sallie Ann Robinson, put it on your list of goals. She has a charismatic personality and makes you feel like you’re her best friend, whether you’ve met her before or not. 

Robinson, who is Ethel in Pat Conroy’s book "The Water is Wide," credits her former school teacher for helping her get noticed as an author.  The author of several cookbooks, Robinson’s most recent title, which was released this month, is Sallie Ann Robinson's "Kitchen: Food and Family Lore from the Lowcountry."

Season two of By The River is packed with a list of exciting authors; and this week the star of the show is Patti Callahan Henry, New York Times bestselling author of fifteen books, including "Becoming Mrs. Lewis: The Improbable Love Story of Joy Davidman and C.S. Lewis."   

Viewers will fall in love with this author from the start because of her warm, friendly spirit and genuine passion for writing.  Henry is a natural storyteller and had us hooked on the set, before, after and during our recording.

There is a lot of excitement over the second season of By The River and the reasons why are many. First, you’ll notice a whole new “look.” We have a new set, which has a Lowcountry feel. The quality of the picture will be clearer and we are especially proud of this season’s lineup.

SC Department of Insurance Director Ray Farmer spoke with SCETV recently about the importance of getting flood insurance as soon as possible.  It’s important to understand it takes 30 days before the insurance goes into effect.  

Just one inch of water can cause around $25,000 worth of damage, yet most South Carolinians do not have flood Insurance and home owners policies do not cover flooding.  Right now less than 10% of people in SC have flood insurance, according to the SC DOI.

By The River Production Underway

By The River set is under construction for Season 2.

Production is now underway for the second season of By The River, a collaborative effort of SCETV and The University of South Carolina Beaufort’s communication studies program.  The interview-style show, that highlights authors from South Carolina and the southeast, has a whole new look this year.  Instead of using the virtual set shown in Season One, a new physical set was built by Josh Thompson of Columbia, who will also serve as the show’s lighting director.

The annual PGA tournament held for half a century on Hilton Head Island is a big attraction, not just for long-time golf fans, but for budding ones, too.

They’ve each demonstrated a willingness to try new mediums, practice new skills and through that, they’ve displayed a passion that- before prison- they never knew they had.

New Look Coming for By The River

Season Two of By The River will look a whole lot different than the first season. This month a new set is being constructed, with the help of the University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB) students who also take part in the show's production.  While the entire look won't be revealed for a couple months, we can reveal that the set has a "coastal theme."  

Also, the By The River author selection committee has met and reviewed author submissions for Season Two.  Authors selected should anticipate a call or email within the next few weeks.

Culinary Institute of the South set to open in 2020 in Bluffton

The Culinary Institute of the South at the Technical College of the Lowcountry is set to open in the fall of 2020, according to the Beaufort County school.  

This 26,000 square-foot state-of-the-art facility is funded by more than $11.5 million from Beaufort County, Beaufort County School District and the Town of Bluffton.

Author Stephanie Austin Edwards, who will be featured Thanksgiving Day on By The River, has lived a life full of interesting stories.  A former dancer, Edwards spent time on Broadway and worked with stars like Michael Jackson and Woody Allen.  While her experiences made for exciting memories, she ultimately chose to go back to her roots - the South Carolina Lowcountry.  Edwards, author of What We Set in Motion, gives viewers of By The River a glimpse of her journey as an author and also as a friend to Pat Conroy, the late legendary Lowcountry autho
