Charleston International Airport Closed Thursday

The latest on the winter storm in South Carolina as of:

1:30 p.m.

The runways at Charleston International Airport remain closed Thursday, due to the lingering winter weather conditions.

The National Weather Service in Charleston recorded 5.3 inches of snowfall on Wednesday. The significant snow and ice has rendered the airport’s runways and taxiways inoperable, according to Paul Campbell, executive director and CEO of the Charleston County Aviation Association.

A winter weather advisory was issued at 7:09 p.m. and is in effect until 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, for the following counties: Allendale; Beaufort; Charleston; Coastal Colleton; Coastal Jasper; Dorchester; Hampton; Inland Berkeley; Inland Colleton; Inland Jasper; Tidal Berkeley.

McMaster Declares Public Health Emergency Over Opioid Epidemic

Gov. Henry McMaster declared the opioid crisis a public health emergency Monday in his latest push to help combat the growing problem in South Carolina.

McMaster called the epidemic a “silent hurricane” from the state Emergency Operations Center surrounded by Cabinet secretaries and others who are now part of an emergency response team to address the problem.

Heroin deaths jumped 67 percent from 2014 to 2016 and have not peaked yet, officials said.  A major factor in the death increases is the prevalence of the powerful, synthetic opioid called fentanyl.

USC Economists Say SC Economy to Remain Strong in 2018

University of South Carolina economists said the state’s economy will remain strong in 2018, despite a tight labor market and large layoffs in the Midlands area.

Job creation, the single best indicator of economic performance, is expected to grow at 2.1 percent in 2018, according to research economist Joseph Von Nessen who spoke at the annual economic outlook conference in Columbia on Friday.

Rep. Todd Atwater Announces Attorney General Bid

Rep. Todd Atwater, R-Lexington, announced on the State House steps Wednesday his run for attorney general.

Atwater is taking aim at current Attorney General Alan Wilson, a fellow Republican from Lexington County, who is running for his third term in office.

The crux of Atwater's campaign is to stymie corruption in Columbia, something he says the current attorney general can't do since he removed himself from the ongoing State House corruption probe citing a conflict of interest.

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster named Upstate businesswoman Pamela Evette as his running mate in the 2018 gubernatorial race  on Tuesday afternoon.
 
Evette, 50, is president and CEO of Quality Business Solutions, a Travelers Rest-based company, which generates nearly $1 billion in revenue. She is a self-proclaimed “Trump girl” who is in good company with McMaster, who was the first statewide elected official to endorse President Donald Trump in 2016.

With freezing low temperatures already chilling South Carolinians this week, several state officials told citizens on Tuesday to be prepared for the winter weather season and the potential hazards it may bring over the coming months.

To understand the 2018 governor’s race, rewind a year to the election of President Donald Trump.

Trump’s win moved up South Carolina’s gubernatorial race calendar, when shortly after he won, he named then Gov. Nikki Haley to become his United Nations ambassador.

Moments after a near unanimous Senate vote in January, Haley resigned her office to second-in-command Henry McMaster. The move instantly gave McMaster greater name recognition and a modern track record to run on.
