In the early 1980s, the fitness craze was born and with it, the popularity of aerobics where women found the exercises helpful to firm and tone their bodies, but some women wanted to take this several steps further. For this ETV Classic, we meet three women bodybuilders and follow them at the annual competition in Myrtle Beach.
We meet with their personal trainers and family members who support them in their efforts. Along with a driving determination, the contestants require discipline to maintain changes in life style to help get their bodies ready for the competition. In addition to long hours of weight training, the contestants adhere to a strict diet, along with supplements which can be very expensive. For the competition, the body builders learn how to pose for the judges and create a choreographic set of required movements to music of their choice. Selection of the posing costume is important as well as obtaining a dark tan to better show the definition of the muscle and veins that the judges will be looking for.
