South Carolina Environmental Law Project

Since 1987, the South Carolina Environmental Law Project (SCELP) has defended against harmful land uses and other major environmental threats across the state.

“We are the only non-profit environmental law firm exclusively in and of this state – rooted in the very places we fight for, from the Blue Ridge foothills to the Sea Islands,” said Amy Armstrong, SCELP’s Executive Director. “We extend legal assistance to individuals and organizations statewide, defending landmarks like Paris Mountain from incompatible development and protecting the Gullah/Geechee people's irreplaceable cultural homeland on St. Helena Island.”

“With nine attorneys, four offices and nearly four decades of experience, we are the last line of defense against harmful land uses and major environmental threats across South Carolina,” continued Armstrong. “We are driven to do right by our land, water and communities: defending them from irreversible harms, correcting past wrongs and promoting systemic change to safeguard them.”

“SCELP proudly supports South Carolina ETV and Public Radio because we share a commitment to South Carolina's people, places and future. An informed public is essential to the kind of transparent, participatory decision-making our democracy and natural systems depend on,” said Armstrong.

SCELP is a non-profit with legal expertise in the following areas: coastal management, water and wetlands, wildlife and habitat conservation, and landfills, nuclear and toxic waste. For resources or to learn more about the organization and its efforts, visit their website at https://scelp.org/.
