A Conversation with Justice Ernest Finney, Jr.: A Lifetime of Success (2000)

Finney was known as an outstanding defense lawyer and civil rights advocate and was elected to the S.C. House of Representatives in 1972. His appointment to the House Judiciary Committee, made him the first African American to serve on that committee.

Senator I. DeQuincey Newman | Carolina Journal (1983)

There had been an outcry in recent years about Black South Carolinians not being represented in the Senate. This led to the Senate district lines being redrawn. Before this new map was redrawn, however, the Rev. I.  DeQuincey Newman was elected from a district that had a white majority. Alex Sanders had served in that district until he was elected the Chief Judge of the SC Court of Appeals.

In this ETV Classic and SCETV Special Report, Charles Bierbauer reviews the life of accomplishments of South Carolina Senator Strom Thurmond following his passing on June 26, 2003, at 100 years of age. Bierbauer observed that Strom Thurmond was a teacher, a judge, a soldier, a governor, then a senator.

In the 1983 documentary Michael's Story, we find Michael Tecklenburg in his first year at Honors College at the College of Charleston. We learn of his early journey as a child with profound hearing loss to that of a young man going to college with hearing peers. Our production crews at SCETV followed up with Michael Tecklenburg in 1988 to find him pursuing a career in law and politics while continuing his education at Columbia University Law School and succeeding as a deaf man
