During February, South Carolina ETV and Public Radio (SCETV) commemorates Black History Month with special programming that explores the history, culture, achievements and lived experiences of Black Americans. Through documentaries, performance specials and original conversations, SCETV’s February lineup reflects the enduring impact of Black voices and stories in shaping the nation’s past and present.
UPCOMING PROGRAMS ON SCETV
- Finding Edna Lewis – From Freetown, Virginia, to New York City, Edna Lewis introduced generations of Americans to seasonal and Southern cooking rooted in the Black communities of rural Virginia. In this documentary, food writer Deb Freeman travels to the places where Lewis lived and worked, exploring her lasting influence and why her legacy deserves wider recognition. Airs Feb. 13 at 4 p.m. (ETV)
- Wes Montgomery: A Celebration Concert – This concert special celebrates the life and music of legendary jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery. Recorded before a live audience, the program features the IU Jacobs School of Music Jazz Ensemble and performances by guitarist Dave Stryker, organist Bobby Floyd and drummer Sean Dobbins, alongside reflections on Montgomery’s enduring influence. Airs Feb. 15 at 8 p.m. (South Carolina Channel)
- Becoming bell hooks – This documentary explores the life and legacy of author, scholar and cultural critic bell hooks, whose work examined the intersections of race, class and gender. The film highlights how her upbringing in Kentucky and connection to regional culture shaped her thinking and her belief that feminism should be accessible to everyone. Airs Feb. 15 at 11 p.m. (ETV)
- Never Drop the Ball – This film chronicles the journey of Black baseball players during decades of exclusion from Major League Baseball, leading to the creation of the Negro National and Negro American Leagues. Set against the backdrop of segregation, the documentary highlights the players’ passion for the game and the legacy that paved the way for Jackie Robinson’s historic breakthrough in 1947. Airs Feb. 16 at 9 p.m. (South Carolina Channel)
- American Masters – Sun Ra: Do the Impossible – This American Masters premiere explores the extraordinary life of Sun Ra, poet, philosopher and musical visionary. Through interviews, archival footage and performances, the documentary examines Sun Ra’s artistry, philosophy and lasting influence on music and culture. Premieres Feb. 22 at 9 p.m. (South Carolina Channel)
- A Fuller Education – This documentary chronicles the life and work of Dr. Howard Fuller, a civil rights leader and educator whose journey from Black Power activism to education reform shaped national conversations about schools and opportunity. The film examines his advocacy and impact on efforts to improve education for underserved children. Premieres Feb. 26 at 8 p.m. (ETV)
- Everlasting: Life and Legacy of Medgar Evers – This two-hour documentary honors the life and legacy of civil rights leader Medgar Evers. Featuring interviews with family members, colleagues and historians, the film offers a personal and powerful look at Evers’ courage, sacrifice and enduring influence. Premieres Feb. 26 at 9 p.m. (ETV)
