South Carolina ETV and Public Radio (SCETV) has expanded its weather support services, enhancing the agency’s public safety and emergency communications services for South Carolina. Leading the expanded effort is award-winning meteorologist and broadcast executive Tim Miller, who serves as director of the South Carolina Emergency Information Network (SCEIN) and chief meteorologist.
In 2018, SCETV partnered with the Florida Public Radio Emergency Network (FPREN) at the University of Florida to launch SCEIN. The partnership helped establish the foundation for SCEIN, which now serves as the state's public media emergency communications service. The network delivers timely weather information and emergency messaging through SCETV's statewide network of 11 television stations and nine radio stations, as well as digital and social media platforms. Working in partnership with the South Carolina Emergency Management Division (SCEMD), the National Weather Service and local emergency management agencies, SCEIN provides critical information before, during and after hurricanes, tropical storms, severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, flooding, winter weather, wildfires, extreme temperatures and other emergencies.
As part of a significant expansion of its weather and emergency communications services, SCETV has expanded operations to increase the network’s ability to provide timely, locally focused weather information and emergency updates across television, radio and digital platforms. The expanded in-house services help ensure South Carolinians have access to trusted information whenever and wherever they need it.
SCETV has launched an enhanced weather experience at SCETV.org/weather, offering statewide weather resources including:
- Current weather conditions
- Interactive radar
- Satellite imagery
- Seven-day regional forecasts
- Live weather cameras
- Severe weather alerts
- Emergency preparedness information
The weather experience is also available through the SCETV App and the SC Public Radio website, allowing access to weather and emergency information across the network’s platforms.
On-air, Miller provides daily weather reports heard statewide on SC Public Radio’s broadcast and streaming network during Morning Edition and All Things Considered. Additional weather updates can be heard nearly every hour at seven and 19 past the hour. Forecasts cover every region of South Carolina, with additional updates provided during significant weather events and emergency situations.
Audiences can also tune in for live weather briefings on Facebook and YouTube each weekday at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., where Miller provides forecast updates, discusses developing weather conditions, answers viewer questions and shares practical information to help South Carolinians prepare for changing weather.
SCETV has a longstanding vital role in the state's emergency communications infrastructure. SCETV is designated as the state's media of record during natural disasters and emergencies and serves as a key component of the Emergency Alert System. In addition, SCETV maintains the statewide National Weather Service transmitter network, supports the delivery of AMBER Alerts and weather warnings to all 46 counties, and provides critical communications infrastructure for emergency response partners, including the South Carolina Healthcare Emergency Amateur Radio Team (SCHEART) and the South Carolina Wing of the Civil Air Patrol.
Additionally, in collaboration with the SCEMD and the Governor’s Office, SCETV broadcasts and livestreams statewide press conferences and provides the latest information on state government office closings.
Chief Meteorologist Tim Miller brings more than 30 years of leadership experience in television, radio, meteorology and public information to the role. Throughout his career, he has led media organizations through periods of innovation and growth while earning five Emmy Awards for excellence in television broadcasting. His experience working alongside emergency managers, government officials and community leaders has established him as a trusted communicator across South Carolina and beyond during severe weather and other critical events.
