The SC African American History Calendar 2026: January Honoree is Oscar Marion.

Oscar Marion was born into slavery in South Carolina but rose to become a notable figure during the American Revolutionary War. Serving alongside the renowned General Francis Marion, known as the “Swamp Fox,” Oscar Marion exemplified loyalty, bravery, and resilience. He volunteered for seven years in the 2nd Continental Army Regiment of South Carolina, participating in pivotal battles such as Fort Moultrie, Savannah, Charleston, and Eutaw Springs.
Throughout his service, Marion took on many roles—bodyguard, cook, oarsman, bugler, and fighter—demonstrating his versatility and commitment. His fearless tactics and guerrilla warfare contributed significantly to the success of the Continental forces, including the decisive victory at Yorktown. Despite the oppressive constraints of slavery, Oscar Marion’s legacy endures as a powerful symbol of selfless devotion and perseverance. In 2006, the United States officially recognized him as an African American Patriot, acknowledging his “devoted and selfless consecration to the service of our country.”
His story highlights the vital contributions of African Americans to the fight for independence and reflects South Carolina’s rich history of resilience and patriotism. Oscar Marion’s life is a testament to the extraordinary impact that individuals, regardless of their origins, can have in shaping history through courage and unwavering dedication to liberty.
