In this episode, Patti Just introduces novelist and professor Dr. Mark Steadman. Like many writers, Steadman had many careers before earning his role as writer in residence at Clemson University in 1957. After taking a year to teach in Cairo, Egypt, Steadman truly began writing a series of short stories which were published in 1971 as McAffee County: A Chronicle. His collection of short stories was inspired by real-life characters and experiences that were then placed in the fictional McAffee County. Steadman would go on to publish many more novels such as A Lion’s Share and Angel Child. His work showcases southern life through his unique writing and desire to share stories of people outside the norm.
Patti Just, host of the Writers' Circle of South Carolina, talks with authors and poets from across the state and country whose work highlights South Carolina’s rich history, diverse culture, and people.
