Born in Charleston, Dr. Louis D. Rubin Jr. grew up between two worlds: the quiet, middle-class uptown streets of his childhood and the vibrant, artistic downtown that later shaped his imagination. Though he once dreamed of becoming a baseball player, writing ultimately claimed his life’s focus, leading him to earn his master’s and PhD at Johns Hopkins University and later found the graduate creative writing program at Hollins College. When his family moved to Virginia during his college years, he left Charleston physically but never in spirit; in his imagination, he never truly departed. His fiction continually returns to the city, while his nonfiction, including Small Craft Advisory, explores his fascination with boats stemming from his childhood.
Now a highly respected critic of Southern literature, Rubin provides great insight into his life’s work and the path of Southern writing. Dr. Rubin speaks with wisdom and passion for writing that every person can learn from!
