James Dickey, a Georgia-born poet, novelist, and critic, studied at Vanderbilt University, earning both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. He became the first professor and poet-in-residence at the University of South Carolina. Dickey is best known for his novel Deliverance, which was adapted into a major motion picture, and his latest work, The Whole Motion, a collection of poems in which the structure evolves from traditional forms to unique and varied layouts.
Having published his first book at age 37, Dickey also served in the military twice after high school, pursuing education whenever possible between his service. In the interview, he reads excerpts from The Whole Motion and shares his philosophy that great poetry should be both deep and simple, leaving readers in awe of its craft.
