Domestic violence and firearm access are closely linked. Nearly half of mass shootings in recent years have involved domestic violence, and women are significantly more likely to be killed by an abusive partner when a firearm is present. Millions of women in the United States have reported being threatened with a gun by an intimate partner. Abuse often includes intimidation, threats, isolation, emotional manipulation, and controlling behavior. Abusers may use threats of harm—to you, themselves, or loved ones—to maintain power and control.
Federal and state laws may restrict firearm possession for individuals convicted of domestic violence offenses and may require the surrender of firearms and ammunition. If you are experiencing abuse, know that safe, confidential support is available. You do not have to face these threats alone, and there are resources to help you create a plan for safety and seek assistance.

South Carolina ETV and Public Radio (SCETV) are participating in a yearlong partnership with the South Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault (SCCADVASA) on an initiative called South Carolina Speaks: Focus on Domestic Violence. SCETV and SCCADVASA will work together to raise awareness and educate the public over the next year through multiplatform coverage.
