Sponsor Spotlight - Indigo Books

Indigo Books, located in Freshfields Village on Johns Island, is an independent bookstore that has been catering to readers throughout the Lowcountry and beyond for over three decades.

Lying between the retirement/resort islands of Kiawah and Seabrook, Indigo serves a varied audience ranging from locals to customers from all over the country and the world. According to co-owner Linda Malcolm, “Our customer base is typically a well-educated group with deep experience across a broad range of professions. They remain inquisitive and involved and we see strong support for the arts among them. I think similar descriptions can be made of public radio’s audience.”

When Linda and her husband, Nat, purchased the store in 1998, one of the first things they did was sponsor Radio Reader. “We were already longtime personal public radio supporters and enjoyed listening to Dick Estell. It just seemed a natural thing to do to support a program that promoted books and reading. We honestly never thought of it as marketing, just a way to support writers and books and reading in the broad community.”

She goes on to say, “It has been a bonus to have visitors come into the bookstore and say they hear us ‘all the time’ on public radio and wanted to come find us while they were in the area. Just proving that sometimes the best marketing is something you are unaware of—like good service and thoughtful actions.”

Indigo’s offerings include the regular fiction and nonfiction genres, collections in local history and culture, and international fiction. They are also well stocked with cards and paper goods. Listeners can hear the sponsor’s message of support regularly on Walter Edgar’s Journal and Performance Today.
