Carolyn Donges, Education Associate, Guidance Services, introduces the panel of five that participated in a program about helping students and parents on the first anniversary of 9/11, and ways to assist children during this time. Ms. Donges noted that 9/11 was a defining moment in our American history, similar to the attack on Pearl Harbor or the assassination of John F. Kennedy and civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King.
As the news media covers 9/11 and pays tribute to those who lost their lives, the emotions and reactions that were evoked that day may reoccur. Ms Donges noted that research has shown that adults and children who experienced a traumatic event show a range of reactions and emotions such as stress, anger, shock, grief, and depression.
Many of the tips offered in this production have usefulness and relevance today.
