Who’s making South Carolina laws that govern our everyday lives?
It’s not the governor – though the governor certainly has an important role. Our laws are decided by a bicameral – 2 house -- group of 170 part-time legislators, who meet and pass laws in Columbia every year: The South Carolina General Assembly. There’s the House… with 124 members. Each member represents more than 41,000 voters. And the Senate… with 46 members. Each member represents more than 110,000 people.
There are currently 88 Republicans and 36 Democrats in the House. And there are 34 Republicans and 12 Democrats in the Senate." So, Republicans hold supermajorities in both chambers. In other words, Republicans have more influence over legislation, and Democrats have less of a say in passing and changing bills.
However, at the end of the day, that doesn’t mean that the two parties don’t ever work together or agree on changes to state law.
