Dr. M. Maceo Nance | Profile (1974) | ETV Classics

This episode of Profile honors the remarkable legacy and everlasting impact of Dr. M. Maceo Nance, South Carolina State University’s first alumnus to serve as its president. Tenured for 19 years, Dr. Nance guided the institution through South Carolina’s grapple with the civil rights movement with his belief in growth. His dedication to this belief led to the expansion of the SC State’s student body, facilities, and faculty that strengthened his belief in the university’s future.

Founded in 1896 as a land grant college, SC State was established to provide industrial, agricultural, and mechanical studies to African American students.

Dr. Nance is recognized for his deep connection with the student body and community of Orangeburg that has resulted in a lasting relationship being built. When asked about the presence of African Americans in higher education, Dr. Nance noted that there is a responsibility of providing education for all. His strong belief that “people need education like bread” reflects his commitment to accessible education for African Americans during a period that was so dismissive of their learning opportunities.
