SC in the Space Age (1991) | Palmetto Specials | ETV Classics

This SCETV program provides a look back at the experiences of Charles F. Bolden Jr, and his rise to becoming 1 of 6 South Carolinians to become astronauts at the time. He prompts viewers to take on their dreams and appreciate life and the people in it.

Bolden Jr. accounts that his journey began with a 15-minute flight as a child where he became excited about aviation. He attributes his development of ambition and achievement to his time spent on his high school swimming team. Charles Bolden Jr. and past educators who he remained close with reflect on the role education played in his development as a leader and inspiration for the people around him. To accompany this, footage of Charles Bolden Jr’s commencement at the University of South Carolina furthers this notion of support for education. Following his time in the United States Naval Academy, Bolden Jr. thinks back on his mission with Steve Hawley as they worked on the Hubble Space Telescope.

The program closes with words of encouragement from Ronald McNair’s commencement at the University of South Carolina and his reflection on the lesson he learned from his good friend Charles Bolden Jr.
