According to Dr. Walter Edgar, the Revolutionary War in South Carolina may have started and ended in Charleston, but the war was won in the Carolina backcountry.
To commemorate the U.S.A.’s 250th birthday, this episode of History In A Nutshell is proud to showcase the contributions and legacies of the three legendary South Carolinian partisan generals during the American Revolutionary War: Andrew Pickens, Thomas Sumter, and Francis Marion. Audiences can get a glimpse into their early lives and how their experiences in previous conflicts against Native Americans molded them into the famed Revolutionary War militia leaders we know of today. Additionally, audiences can learn how they earned their respective nicknames, like “Swamp Fox”, “Fighting Gamecock” and “Wizard Owl”.
The names Pickens, Sumter, and Marion can be found all over South Carolina; their names forever being cemented into the Palmetto State’s history.
