Carolina Journal presents a special look at the extraordinary legacy and life journey of astronaut Charles Bolden. His journey from the segregated south to the platforms for NASA’s shuttles is a testament to his perseverance, faith, and leadership that has proven him to be a trailblazer for aspiring Americans everywhere.
Follow along as heartfelt reflections from his family members, grade schoolteachers, and members of his community paint a vivid portrait of Charles Bolden’s character. Growing up in Columbia, South Carolina, Bolden’s path was shaped by his mother’s determination to set him up for success and mold him into a model citizen. Many of his teachers noted his natural leadership and academic brilliance as they reflected on the time that they spent guiding him.
Charles Bolden’s journey to the United States Naval Academy was met with obstacles as he was presented with racial tension before even being admitted. However, through multiple Black support systems and communal contributions, Bolden was able to continue his journey. He highlights his advocacy for kinship through his role as a Marine Corps recruiter and his outspoken support for youth which was inspired by the story of his brother.
Selected as a NASA astronaut candidate in 1980, Charles Bolden’s career took flight, which eventually led to his historic piloting of the Space Shuttle Columbia. Beyond his professional achievements, Bolden’s dedication to his family is made clear through the touching words of his wife and children.
The program closes with a eulogy for fellow astronaut and dear friend of Bolden’s, Ronald McNair, who had been a large contributor to his journey to becoming an astronaut.
